  • Reducing muscular tension

What Is An RMT?

An RMT, also known as a registered massage therapist, is a healthcare professional who provides hand-on treatment to their clients through the manipulation of soft tissue. This practice can help reduce pain, inflammation, and work through any injuries a client may be recovering from. RMTs are trained in a range of therapies and techniques, allowing them to address every client’s individual needs and concerns.

Just like other healthcare professionals, RMTs practice within their professional scope of expertise. This means manual treatment, but also means assessing the soft tissue of each client. Often, RMTs will coordinate therapy with other healthcare professionals to ensure that clients will have every need addressed and treated as needed.

How Can Massage Therapy (RMT) Help Me?

Massage therapy can help people in a variety of ways. One of the most common thoughts with massage is that it is used to help promote relaxation. It is true that massage can help work out stressed muscles, reducing overall tension. But that is not all massage can be used for.

Massage can also be used to help release nerve compression, improve circulation, increase range of motion, and reduce pain and inflammation. If you have either had a recent injury or are under a lot of stress, massage therapy can help set you on a path to wellbeing.

Can Anyone Receive Massage Therapy (RMT)?

Massage therapy is beneficial to clients of any age, from infants up to the elderly. Many people can benefit from the positive results from massage therapy, but not everyone should receive it.

Clients who are unwell, such as having a fever or are nauseated should not receive massages. Instead of helping flush out toxins, a massage in this case might make you feel weaker instead of stronger. Also, if you have recently been involved in an accident, you should be cleared by a physician before seeking massage therapy.

Questions To Ask Your RMT

It is important to ask your Calgary RMT questions to ensure that you know what to expect. These questions should include:

  • How do I tell my therapist that the pressure isn’t deep enough?
  • How much discomfort can I expect?
  • Should I indicate if I am worried there is too much pressure?
  • How frequently will I need to be seen?
  • What should I do to prepare for a session?
  • What can I expect after a session?

Does Massage Therapy Hurt?

Massage therapy can sometimes cause mild discomfort, especially if the muscles that are being attended to are sore and tight. This does not mean that you should avoid the massage, however. The massage therapy will help bring the blood to the sore area, helping move things along and remove the inflammation. If you are feeling pain during a treatment session, it is important to let the RMT know so the treatment can be adjusted accordingly.

What Are The Benefits Of Massage Therapy?

There are a lot of benefits that you can get from massage therapy. The first is that massage can help reduce stress levels and increase relaxation. This is done by working through the tension within the sore muscles, increasing the blood flow to the area. When you are less tense, you will have more energy and focus, improving your overall outlook.

Massage therapy can also promote good circulation throughout the body, carrying oxygen-rich blood to the areas that need it the most. It can help increase your mobility while reducing your pain level, making it easier for you to get around.

How Often Should I Have Massage Therapy?

The frequency that you need massage therapy can vary greatly from client to client. Typically, if you are just getting started with massage therapy, you should have massages twice a week. This helps the body get into the flow of purging the toxins and promoting good circulation. After a month or so, the amount of time between massages can be increased to the point that massages act as maintenance rather than a treatment. The amount you will need then is dependent on your needs as an individual.
